How long does postpartum bleeding last?

Known as lochia, the bleeding changes over 4 to 6 weeks from red to brown to straw-coloured. It should never have an offensive smell, and medical attention is required if this is the case. Most doctors would recommend abstinence from bathing, swimming and sex for 6 weeks after birth as the uterus is still a ‘Raw Wound’.
