To ensure the Elle TENS unit works effectively, it’s best to start using it at the very beginning of early labour. This allows your body’s endorphins (natural painkillers) to build up before the intensity increases.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to set up and use the device:

1. Preparation

• Check the Batteries: Ensure you have two fresh AA batteries installed.

• Clean Your Skin: Ensure your back is clean and dry. Avoid using oils or lotions, as these will prevent the electrode pads from sticking.

• Connect the Leads: Plug the lead wires into the top of the unit and attach the other ends to the four electrode pads.

2. Positioning the Pads

Placement is key for targeting the right nerves. You will need four pads in total:

• Top Pair: Place two pads on either side of your spine, with the top of the pads at about bra-strap level.

• Bottom Pair: Place the other two pads on either side of your spine, just above your tailbone (at the small of your back).

Basic Operation

1. Power On: Press the ON/OFF button. The screen will light up, usually showing “0” for intensity.

2. Increase Intensity: Press the CH1 and CH2 buttons (usually the ‘+’ buttons) to increase the tingling sensation for the top and bottom pads respectively.

3. The Goal: Increase the level until you feel a strong but comfortable “pins and needles” sensation. It should not be painful.

Managing Contractions (The “Boost” Button)

The Elle TENS features a dedicated Boost button, which is the most important tool for active labour:

• During a Contraction: Press the Boost button. This switches the device into a more intense, continuous mode to help block the surge of pain.

• Between Contractions: Press the Boost button again to return to the gentle, pulsing “resting” mode.

• Do Not Use before the 37th week of pregnancy (unless under medical supervision).

• Do Not Use if you have a pacemaker or any heart rhythm problems.

• Do Not Use if you have epilepsy.

• Remove the device if you decide to use a birthing pool or bath; the unit and pads must stay dry.
